Details: House Activity

As a warning, this section gets a little complicated. The only reason I include it is because people often see no planets in some of their houses in their birth chart and think there is nothing happening in those areas of life. Well, there is. And explaining it gets a bit involved.

As a review, there are 10 planets representing our internal actors, 12 zodiac signs giving character to each of the planets (actors) and 12 houses signifying the areas of life played by the planets.

So if there are only 10 planets and there are 12 houses, at least two houses will be empty, and usually more are empty since more than one planet may be in a particular house. For example, in the natal chart below, there are no planets in the 2nd, 6th, 8th, and 11th houses. Does this mean that nothing happens in the areas of life associated with these empty houses? Not at all.

Example of a Natal (Birth) Chart

Example of a Natal (Birth) Chart

The energy brought to each house by the planets comes from two sources:

  1. The energy of planet(s) are brought directly into the house in which the planet(s) reside(s). For example, in the natal chart above, the 9th house contains the planets Uranus uranus and Jupiter jupiter, both of which are in Cancer cancer. These energies directly affect the 9th house and may show up as expansive jupiter and novel uranus exploration of far away places (9th house) by using an approach that is sensitive and caring cancer. If multiple planets are in a particular house as with this example, these energies often play together simultaneously when they are close to each other (i.e. conjunct conjunct).
  2. The second source of energy comes from the ruling planet(s) of the particular house. Let’s now make some sense of this ruling planet concept. Each house has an associated zodiac sign. In the figure above, the 9th house is in Cancer cancer. Every Zodiac Sign is ruled by one or two planets. The ruling planet carries it’s energy into the house of the Zodiac Sign it rules. The planets which rule each zodiac sign are shown in the table below. Continuing with our example and looking at the table below, we see that Cancer cancer is ruled by the Moon moon. In the birth chart above, the Moon moon is in the 3rd house in Capricorn capricorn so the Moon carries it’s energy directly into the 3rd house (per part 1 above) and also carries its energy into the 9th house which it rules (because Cancer cancer is in the 9th house and the Moon rules Cancer). So the energy in the 9th house may include a need moon for structured capricorn thoughts (3rd house) and organized capricorn communication (3rd house) in the areas of higher learning (9th house).

Let’s take another example this time using a House that has no Planets. In the birth chart above, there are no planets in the 8th house which is in Gemini gemini. From part 1 above, there is nothing happening because there are no planets in the 8th House. From part 2, we see that the 8th House is in Gemini gemini which, using the table below, is ruled by Mercury mercury. From the natal chart above, we see that Mercury mercury is in the 5th house in Pisces pisces. So Mercury mercury energy will also show up in the 8th house and may appear as imaginative  pisces thinking gemini in helping people creatively (5th house) pursue transformation (8th house) in their lives.
