The background constellations are represented by the 12 zodiac signs which include Aries
, Taurus
, Gemini
, Cancer
, Leo
, Virgo
, Libra
, Scorpio
, Sagittarius
, Capricorn
, Aquarius
, and Pisces
. There are glyphs associated with the zodiac signs which are included above and which you can also view in the box labeled “Zodiac Signs” in the left portion of the natal chart below. You can also see these glyphs on the outer-most ring of the circular natal chart below. For example, you can see the Moon
in the 6:30 position with the zodiac sign of Capricorn
on the outer edge of the circle. This means that the background portion of the sky where the Moon
was at birth corresponds to the zodiac sign of Capricorn
. In this example, we would say that the Moon is in Capricorn. Most people are familiar with their Sun
sign which is the portion of the zodiac behind the Sun at the time of birth. In the birth chart below, the Sun
which is at about the 4:00 position is in Pisces
.
Example of a Natal (Birth) Chart
When someone asks you, “What is your sign?” they are technically asking you, “What was the zodiac sign behind your Sun
at the time of your birth?” If you read your horoscope in the morning paper, this only corresponds to a very general description of only one (Sun) of the numerous planets in your chart. This is like trying to look at one tenth of a painting and trying to get some meaning from it. That is why daily horoscopes are found to be generally useless by most people – and give astrology a bad name.
The zodiac signs can be thought of as adding character to each planet (actor). Let’s use the example above of the moon
in Capricorn
. See if you can again find it in the natal chart above. Capricorn
adds a characteristic of being structured and in control while the Moon
actor represents what the person needs to feel more comfortable and secure. So a person born with the Moon in Capricorn has a need for structure and control in order to feel safe and secure. Whether this person chooses to use this energy in a stifling way or in a broadly contained way is that person’s choice and level of maturity in using this energy.
We often refer to each zodiac sign as having an element of either fire, earth, air, or water. The table below contains a description of the elements and the zodiac signs associated with each element. In a natal chart, we typically count the number of planets in each element. In the natal chart above on the right side, we see the table which lists the number of planets in each element. The table also shows the element associated with the Ascendant
and Midheaven
(right column) which we will talk about later. Notice this chart indicates that there are five of the 10 planets in water. From the table below, we see that Cancer
, Scorpio
, and Pisces
are the water signs. Examining the circular portion of the natal chart above, we see that the five water planets are the Sun
and Mercury
in Pisces
, Jupiter
and Uranus
in Cancer
, and Saturn
in Scorpio
. This abundance of water characteristic will give the person a heightened ability to tune into feelings, instincts and emotions.
In addition to the elements associated with each Zodiac sign, we also look at the qualities. There are three qualities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. The table below contains a description of the Zodiac signs associated with each of the qualities. In the natal chart above on the right side, we see the table which lists the number of planets in each quality. Notice that there are four planets in cardinal, four in fixed, and two in mutable. Referring to the table below, this is suggestive of an energy to initiate and complete endeavors with opportunities for increased flexibility around change.
So far we have discussed the Planets, which are the actors, and also the Zodiac Signs which add character to the Planets (actors). Each Planet is in a particular Zodiac Sign.
